So here we are at the Humphrey er, Terminal 2 airport. Just past security, where we had to wait for Gramma Pat. (We tend to call her Gramma Pat even though she's my aunt because her grandson's name is Patrick, and it can get confusing, but I digress). Anyway, we had to wait for her on account of the metal detector going off from her AK-4 hip replacement. So here I sit, guarding the luggage, writing this, as Pat goes to the bathroom, Kerri goes off in search of food, and my mom goes off shopping.

Last hours of work for the week before the last day before heading off to the Great European Vacation '09! Finally starting to get fidgety about the trip, now that work is essentially behind me. I still have a meeting yet to go to today (to discuss the next Pentathanerd, no less) and then that's all. Oh, except for a few rousing rounds of chess after work with the guys as a sorta going away party. Yeah, we're nerds. We'll be missing our kitty n bunny while we're gone. To make sure Lulu has enough room to stretch out, Kerri was busy this week making an extension to the cage. This should let her run in cute lil circles all she likes without fear of reprisal from a jealous kitten. She'll also have that pictured pile of old socks to bunch up and toss around, as well as some chew toys on the central pillar. This picture is also the first picture taken on my new camera, after finally deciding the other one was just too old. It seems to have worked well enough - image taken, check. Let's see if it doesn't lose all my pictures like the old one did once. Ah, technology. I can't imagine how fidgety I'll be in 24 hous when the endless thought will be repeating in my head - "What are we forgetting?"... What am I forgetting? |

The Pentathanerd ended up being a huge success. I managed to win the Rubik's Cube event with a time of 1 minute, 40 seconds (the first attempt was 1 minute, 42 seconds, even). Luke won boggle for us, smashing the competition with his lengthy word lists. In the end, the points were structured for Mario Kart such that the only way the Marinerded Chickens had a chance of overtaking us Elder Statesmen was if we placed last and they took first. Well, congratulations Marinerded Chicken, well played. Oh, and the Pentathanerd made it into the Star Tribune, even: The nerds have been at the center of the transformation, and they have celebrated the success in appropriately geeky ways, most recently with a week-long lunchtime competition they dubbed the "Pentathanerd." The events, a plethora of geekery, included chess games, Rubik's Cube puzzles, the Boggle word game, foosball and the Mario Kart video game.
Plans are underway for the upcoming Pentathanerd: Winter Games. The only thing certain for now is that there will be different, more challenging events. Stay tuned! |

The Pentathanerd is officially under way at the nerdery. I instigated a week-long competition of five events: - Chess
- Foosball
- Rubik's Cube Speed-Solving
- Boggle
- Mario Kart
Five teams of three players each select their best player to compete in each event to earn points for the overall championship. Today's event, Chess, featured some spirited competition among the kings of blitz chess (see what I did there?). I did pretty well winning two and drawing two, but Sai came out ahead as the winner with three victories and a draw.
Current standings: | Team | Chess Player
| Wins
| Points
| | Velociraptors | Sai | 3.5 | 1115 | The Elder Statesmen
| Mark | 3.0 | 1000 | The Perfectonists
| Justin | 2.0 | 770
| Maranerded Chicken
| Kai | 1.5 | 655
| Blackberry Fools
| Jon | 0.0 | 310
